Description

Babies in the NICU are exposed to a sensory environment that is threatening and frightening to them.  Born too early or too sick to cope they need the support of a multi-disciplinary team to help them to catch up.  Their parents are also vulnerable to mental health problems.  Occupational therapists, with the use of sensory integration and early intervention strategies are in a key position to help these families to cope and thrive in the environment of the NICU. (Bev Hewson)

A preterm neonate goes from the calm, quiet and containment of mom, to the wild and chaotic world. How we handle and position has a long-term impact on every way their body interacts with the world. (Tamara Gritzman)
